Cheetah

Conservation Project

Founded in 2018, the Cape Cheetah Conservation Project, dedicated to restoring wild cheetah populations in the Western Cape, is committed to protecting, rehabilitating, and conserving South Africa’s endangered cheetah population.

What We Do

The cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus), the world’s fastest land animal, is classified as critically endangered by the IUCN. With fewer than 7,000 cheetahs left in the wild and less than 1,700 living in South Africa, urgent action is needed to prevent further decline.

Cheetahs once roamed freely across the Western Cape, but disappeared from the region in the 1860s due to habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and poaching.

Thanks to dedicated conservation efforts and specialised breeding programmes, cheetahs have made a remarkable return to the area in the past two decades.

Learn About Cheetahs

The Cheetah’s name comes from the Hindi word “chita,” meaning “spotted one.” Often referred to as the world’s fastest animal, African Cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) are members of the ‘Big Cat’ family.

Public Donations

Donations are vital for the success of our conservation programmes. Your support helps us continue our work.

Cheetah Conservation in the Western Cape

We are working towards securing a protected 5,000-hectare wilderness for rehabilitated cheetahs, a model for global wildlife conservation. You can help make a direct impact by sponsoring a rescued cheetah or donating to ARC.

Your support helps with veterinary care, rehabilitation, and eventual release into the wild. As a Section 21 non-profit organisation, we rely on public donations to continue our work.

A New Model for Wildlife Rehabilitation

The Cape Cheetah Conservation Project is part of the award-winning Animal Rescue Centre (ARC), a conservation initiative by Inverdoorn Private Game Reserve and Aquila Private Game Reserve.

Together, we lead the Western Cape’s anti-poaching and wildlife rehabilitation efforts, ensuring South Africa’s wildlife heritage is protected for generations to come.
